The Day I Met my Son

So Friday, December 5, 2008 at 3:00 pm I received a phone call from Kate asking if I had plans that afternoon. I said no, what did she have in mind? She asked if I wanted to go see the baby she had told me about. Earlier that day she had said I could not meet him until Tuesday. She was able to get the Baby House Director, Irina, to let me and one other woman come to meet our potential babies. So at 4:00 we went.

I hated sitting in her office & being spoken around in Russian. You now know exactly what immigrants from other countries feel like, except you KNOW they are discussing you and the children. Do you measure up? Is your file lacking? Is there something wrong with your papers? Are you wearing the wrong color? Have BO? They could be saying anything…

Then the caregiver brought the baby in. The baby was so cute but I thought it was a boy and this baby was dressed in pink. No worries, it was a boy. I tend to forget that they use whatever clothing fits and do not worry about gender issues here.

I held him and he stared at me. Really started at me. Then he cried. And then he stopped and was alright. I asked about him – 6 months 11 days old and healthy. Amazing, given my history. Then they asked if I wanted him. I stared at him. Really stared at him. And I said yes. And then I cried. And then I stopped and was much more than alright, I was a mom.
